'Go' Finally Conquered by a Computer

Rob, I thought you might be interested in this: COMPUTER BEATS PRO AT U.S. GO CONGRESS

Interesting. The things a human can do that a computer can't are numbered.

wow. good find. i've played on the KGS server before. it's kind of famous.

it should be noted that the computer won the game with a 12 stone handicap. still an impressive feat. the previous best Go AI wasn't even playing at a professional level, so this is a leap forward, rather than a step.

i can't believe how big a rig this thing is; 800 processors? the resources used are astounding.

Yeah, unfortunately, the resources used make the victory a little more hollow, as it's not as much intuitive AI as it is brute force. Don't get me wrong; I'm sure there is some brilliant AI in there as well. But if it were as smart as a human, it wouldn't need that much raw power. Computers have that advantage over us in that their depth of search (disregarding pruning) will always be deeper than ours.

I can't wait until the day when a neural net with just a single processor can process as fast as the human brain. I think it's just a matter of using a much different Intelligence paradigm.

i strongly agree with that last sentence.
