Grammar Annoyance du Jour: "hilarious"

We all know the word "funny" has two meanings, "humorous" and "strange"

Something that is incredibly humorous is hilarious.

Something that is incredibly strange is NOT hilarious. Please stop using it this way.

That is all.

Imagine the following:

Person: I went to the store around 2 bought some grapes.
Me: Really? I was there at like 1:45 getting some apples.
Person: Huh. That's hilarious. We must've barely missed one another.

Well, I think a lot of things that are strange are often also hilarious.

Then you should say "That's hilarious and incredibly strange at the same time!"

Once again, you're forced to accept the duality of a word. Do you really find "funny" to be so confusing in an everyday context?

What duality? "Hilarious" doesn't have this duality. I never said I was confused by "funny" at all.

They were from Planet Xorg, but they looked like the Marx Brothers
This is the way language evolves. A word gets misused, often by being confused with another word, or through some other kind of association with another word. In this case, if hilarious means "very funny" meaning very amusing, people might mistakenly use it to mean "very funny" in the sense of very strange.

If enough people use it, soon we have a new word, a new color on the palette, to describe something strange.

Whad'r'you, anti-evolution, or what?

Of course, I can see some difficulty. "I had a hilarious experience last night -- I was abducted by aliens."

Until it gets into the dictionary, it hasn't fully evolved.

And with guys like you trying to stamp it out, it never will. Man, if you'd been around in medieval England we'd still be saying "wouldst thou drink tea?"
