Today Nintendo released Super Mario RPG for the virtual console. It's the SNES precursor to the Paper Mario games. I bought an N64 copy of Paper Mario a few years back, played all the way through it, and borrowed Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door from Justin, which I finally beat not TWO days ago.

Now I'm wanting to buy SM RPG for 800 points ($8), but we're kinda short on cash right now, and I've bought too much in the way of video games lately. So here's the problem: I have access to a huge library of SNES games via emulator (including Mario RPG) and up until today, I would've been fine playing it that way, as they don't sell it anymore and I have no way of obtaining it. But now that they're selling it, do I not have a moral obligation to purchase it from them, rather than playing it illegally?

Recently I've found out that Homebrew has come far enough along to allow you to install Virtual Console games on your Wii itself. I could have the exact game gaming experience for free. So the question is, is it moral for me to download the game, play it, and when I'm in a better financial situation, purchase it from Nintendo?

And since ROMs are easy enough to find, here are the fabulous games (some available, some not) I'm planning on installing on my Wii (since I have the carts)!

Final Fantasy 2
Final Fantasy 3
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Megaman X
Megaman X2
Star Fox
Super Mario All-Stars
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Super Punch-Out!
Super R-Type
Turn and Burn: No Fly Zone
U.N. Squadron
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Bomberman Hero
Bust-a-Move 2: Arcade Edition
Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness
Gauntlet Legends
The New Tetris
Paper Mario
Star Fox 64
Super Mario 64
Super Smash Bros.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

eh. it's only $8. if it bothers you that much, may as well just pay for it again. personally, i feel frustrated at the thought of having to pay twice for something i already own. then again, the VC isn't exactly making Nintendo any money, so i admire it's dedication. personally, I'm gonna wait on Mario RPG since I already finished it some time ago. Even still, it's good to know that the game is available to the public once again.

also, i need to show you the distractingly long list of import games whose ROMs are now translated and patched by the fans. it's like going to another universe where everything is new and awesome.

As much as I like the Virtual Console and it's purist approach to retro gaming, I really admire the way Capcom handled Bionic Commando: Rearmed. They completely remade the game for XBLA and PSN, so it's worth buying even if you already own the original. i find this approach (while not always practical or appropriate) to be much more competitive and makes the moral factors somewhat moot.

The VC isn't making money for Nintendo? How do you figure that?

There's a base cost for hosting, bandwidth, and QA testing ... but surely that doesn't cost $8 a pop.

I see you have A Link to the Past on your list. May I add something to that list that I believe you will love even more than said Zelda game?

Find the ROM (it was only a PAL release), and please, enjoy the hell out of it. I'm still holding out hope that Nintendo will put that one up on the VC someday soon. Who knows, though...

I'll check it out. I don't feel bad playing PAL games, cause region locking is stupid.
