Windows 7 beta 1 performance

Windows 7 beta 1 performance - How does the OS compare to Vista and XP? | Hardware 2.0 | ZDNet.com

This is a good sign. It beat XP. That's awesome. I'm liking 7 a lot so far. I could tell it was faster than Vista just in the GUI department, but the fact that my old machine can run it with the Aero theme and all the animations turned on just as smoothly as it runs XP says a lot. Makes me wish the full version were coming out sooner. The beta expires in August, so I have no choice but to revert back to XP until it releases. Microsoft has said they could release it as early as December, but we'll see.

Odds are that they'll release another beta or at a release candidate before the current beta expires.

For many of us, the problems with Vista are not in performance, but in convenience. Getting little "are you crazy" boxes every time you try to do something. Downloading an album is an exercise in patience -- "Omigod, someone is trying to CHANGE this computer by putting a SOMG on it that you just bought! Over and over again. Legacy help formats no longer supported. Can't get drivers that work. And last but not least, it reboots whenever the hell it wants to, no matter what you're doing.

Yeah, there were a lot of problems with Vista. 7 fixes a good number of them. The problem you're referring to was the User Access Controls. The UAC is much, much better. You can change the level from ASK ME ABOUT EVERYTHING to I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING STFU. The first-five-minutes GUI overall wasn't a bad experience (that's all the Mojave Project really proved). From my day-and-a-half of use, I can pretty much attest to that.

The other major bone most people had with it was compatibility. While that's supposed to see major improvements, I haven't poked around enough on that front yet.

Performance is a bonus, really. If it ran as well as XP, I'd be happy with it. I was just in stitches because it seems they've improved the UI greatly while somehow making it benchmark faster than the OS I'm currently using.
